MTA was first released under the name GTA3AM (GTA3 Alternative Multiplayer) on February 8, 2003. This first release allowed two players to play GTA III against each other. Only in-vehicle play was allowed; when outside the vehicle you were invisible to other players. As time has progressed, MTA has improved considerably and now allows players to play Vice City as well as GTA III, and includes many of the features in the original games. The next major release of MTA is MTA:Blue which promises to revolutionize the way MTA is played. This version of MTA is supposedly going to synchronize all animations in the game and allow modifications such as GTA: Liberty City and Myriad Islands. MTA is currently in the Top 20 online games according to CSports.net. MTA is currently at version 0.5 awaiting an update to version 0.5.5.

0.5 currently offers two game modes for Vice City: Deathmatch and Stunt. Deathmatch offers several character classes that you can spawn as, each with advantages and disadvantages. Stunt offers you the opportunity to race and perform stunts over ramps that are added to the map.

GTA3 players are offered a "drop-in" style of deathmatch gameplay on Portland and Staunton Island, where the player spawns with limited weapons and has to purchase more at Ammunations with money earned from kills. There are no classes - each player has exactly the same advantages as the next. Shoreside Vale builds on this by offering the player a choice of skin and primary weapon to spawn with. Due to balancing issues with the class system of MTA:VC 0.5, MTA:VC 0.5.5 will copy Shoreside Vale's deathmatch formula.

----------------------------------------------------------

Since the release of 0.1 - 0.2, gangs have emerged from the surface to become the best gang in MTA. The oldest gangs of MTA are VCK (Vice City Killaz, do not mistake with Vice City Korps), B.L.A.S.T.A. (a gang mainly made up of gang leaders on the MTA forum) and VCP (Vice City Police, who topped the first official MTA tournament in 0.2).

Since then, many more gangs have emerged such as FMJ (Full Metal Jacket), VCES (Vice City Emergency Services), KFC (KungFu's Family of Crime), ULK (United Legion of Killers), and FKU (Fine Killing Units). Gangs like these have their own servers and enter official MTA tournaments.
