Make it easier for yourself...

do u want to make a ip shorter into a name you can remember for free....

I have a neat trick you can pull off to make it easier on yourself to remember server IP's

 Simply all you do is get a server IP and then go to

C:/Windows/system32/drivers/etc/hosts.cfg and open it in notepad add the IP and take a few spaces and add the name now that name can be used instead of the server IP. (DONT put .com or any domain names on it coz it might screw your internet browser, and this only works locally which means other players wont be able to use that IP unless u give them ur hosts.cfg file)

 maybe the mta team cud update this into the favourites option for MTA

Edit: You can also do this for websites but dont add a .com to the new name

So you mean people could type in 'SUNLIT' in the server IP box (in MTA) and it would automatically connect them to my server, or would each individual have to do this?

edit: trying to point to google and using that ALWAYS gives me Google: English. Don't know why. Tried /dns ip too.

Google tries to find out your country looking to the URI you have typed in your browser. If you use .com, it will read out the windows language settings and point you to that page. If you use a shorter URI, it is not in googles database and it will show you the english page. There is no way to change this.

would be easier for the mta team to allow you to give the server a "nickname"

then, if you input say...

"howdy" as the server name, itll search the .ini and find the server that matches and connect.

better then a host file, because if you input "howdy" in any other instance where a IP adress or domain should be present itll connect to that server.

  • MTA Team

this is old. We even told people to change that file when we had the ASE problems.

The correct file should be called hosts and not hosts.cfg .

Fastest way to get to the file is to click on start, then run and put the following in the text field:

%SystemRoot%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

then press ok.

Please note that virusscanners and anti spyware tools will report this file as beeing changed. Check the content on a regular basis to make sure no malware added anything new.

off topic .. sure there is

http://www.google.com/preferences

and/or point the link to you want to use in the host file to the language you want (like http://www.google.com/intl/xx-elmer/ for elmer fudd or long list of possibilities )

so like you could just put

mta for http://www.mtavc.com

and goog for http://www.google.com

If I want to use this, I need the IP's of the websites I want to use it for, right? How can I find these?

try this on xp

start - run - cmd

on other windows - start - run - command

then type

ping http://www.mtasa.com

it says : Ping to mtasa.com [67.19.87.235] with 32 byte dat:

go to firefox .. or your internet browser .. and test the last IP 67.19.87.235

it should come out on http://www.mtasa.com/

another way tracert .. or do a whois

But what if i got two servers with the same IP address? But different ports, do i put the ports in? such as "83.149.98.25:22004 whitey"??

Please i've tried putting the port in? and everytime i test the h8crime shortcut (same IP as whitey) it say connection timed out (which happens ALOT) so i cant check to see what server its loading?

I can't reach every site I try. When I try to ping http://www.gmail.com, I get an IP. If I go to that IP using internet explorer, I get Google. (So, Gmail and Google are on the same server, and Google is the main page.)

Is it nevertheless possible to make a quicklink to Gmail, using the host file?

(The same goes for Travian: s1.travian.nl gives an IP that leads the the german version of the game.)

not with the host file afaik

host file is only and just only

host file exist from a age when there was no dns server !! (so that was made so people didnt have to fill in a IP adres in their browser)

there were no dns servers then let alone different ports, subsites etcetcetc

maybe a proxy can do that for you .. but now im just guessing
