" MTA have access to the GTA:SA source code"

IncreEngine

Question

Kalcor (SA-MP Team leader):

Just because another mod did something doesn't mean it's easily possible for SA-MP.

You're comparing SA-MP, a mod that was developed by self-research, with assistance from the GTA modding community, to MTA, a mod developed with the backing of Rockstar Games. MTA have access to the GTA:SA source code headers and debug information. Many of the comments in MTA's code are written by the people who made GTA San Andreas, not MTA developers.

There is no code in SA-MP derived from the GTA:SA source code. It's all our own work.

What do you think?

Kalcor - Samp Developer, I get it now.

What he wrote is a bunch of lies, you CANNOT compaer MTA to SAMP.

IRC Quotes:

Kevuwk: surely if we had the headers we would have included everything requested by now

True

Rockstar Games stopped supporting the modding community since the hot coffee thing released. lol

Which was in 2005.

Best laugh i had in a while ...

Let's get this straight. Back in the good old days when Kalcor/Kye was still part of this team we had some informal contacts with R* North. When we got stuck, we asked them and they returned code snippets to the team if it was possible. We never got any official backing from R* nor had they any hand in the development of the mod.

Hot Coffee ended everything unfortunatly. The good men and women from R* became more carefull. Kye/Kalcor also had access to all this information and even though he splitted off before SA-MP was released he also uses the knowledge of everything he learned while part of the team. And back when we were developing blue for VC we didn't receive VC code snippets but SA code snippets because R* was already working on SA.

He always complain that we are bullying him, but who always throws the first punch?

+1. This post is worth posting it as news.

Would be better to link at SAMP forums.

Nope, would be removed before anyone would see it. Kalcor is verry strict about saying anything that would put him in a negative light. And let's not forget that he created *-MP out of hatred for MTA so defending this mods on his board really is a no-go.

Edit 20th November 2018:

I have removed this comment.

I apologise for the words here that could have upset people. The post was written several years ago (before I started contributing to MTA itself) and is not representative of my views today.

I would be really interested in someone to reverse-engineer the SA-MP, I still remember when MTA:Blue became OpenSource and SA-MP finally fixed tons of bugs. I find this topic pretty amusing and how Kalcor started another fight.

There should be a topic: "SA-MP is using MTA's OpenSource code"

If MTA code exists in SA-MP, then it dosen't matter. MTA is open-source, bottom line. Anyone is free to use MTA code for their needs. It is not 'stealing'.

It's funny, Qais, that you would speculate on potential legal issues, when you have put yourself in a position to be prosecuted over copyright violations. Anyway..

Kye had his reasons for leaving the MTA team. He also had his reasons to keep SA-MP closed-source. He also has the right to moderate the SA-MP community like it's 1984.

Also, MTA did have access to some header files from the GTA:SA source, obtained through a R* insider. (That said, why is that even an issue?)

Before you take sides on this issue (and this goes with any issue in the history of the universe and bacon), you need to remember this:

There are two sides to every story.

Do I like Kye personally? No, not really. Do I think SA-MP is a moist pile of diarrhea? Sure (and I'd like to know what 'stupid design ideas' he disagrees with, just out of curiosity). Do I spend my time running around looking for a way to incite the MTA vs SAMP war? No, and nobody should. Don't just take sides on an issue without investigating deeper. That said, this isn't an issue worth investigating.

As I've said before,if you don't like SA-MP/hate Kye/love MTA just like I do, then focus on MTA and leave it at that. Imitation IS the sincerest form of flattery.

TL;DR stop arguing and get back to playing your favorite GTA multiplayer mod - be it MTA, SAMP, or Rumble - and ignore any bickering from the other side.

jk Rumble sucks

Quote it.

Also, one could say that they came to the same solution MTA has. Copy and pasting a small but of GPL-covered code into something as gargantuan as a GTA multiplayer mod does not mean you need to have to GPL the entire program.

Yes, but the code itself must be.

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html

Preamble

The GNU General Public License is a free, copyleft license for software and other kinds of works.

The licenses for most software and other practical works are designed to take away your freedom to share and change the works. By contrast, the GNU General Public License is intended to guarantee your freedom to share and change all versions of a program--to make sure it remains free software for all its users. We, the Free Software Foundation, use the GNU General Public License for most of our software; it applies also to any other work released this way by its authors. You can apply it to your programs, too.

When we speak of free software, we are referring to freedom, not price. Our General Public Licenses are designed to make sure that you have the freedom to distribute copies of free software (and charge for them if you wish), that you receive source code or can get it if you want it, that you can change the software or use pieces of it in new free programs, and that you know you can do these things.

To protect your rights, we need to prevent others from denying you these rights or asking you to surrender the rights. Therefore, you have certain responsibilities if you distribute copies of the software, or if you modify it: responsibilities to respect the freedom of others.

For example, if you distribute copies of such a program, whether gratis or for a fee, you must pass on to the recipients the same freedoms that you received. You must make sure that they, too, receive or can get the source code. And you must show them these terms so they know their rights.

Developers that use the GNU GPL protect your rights with two steps:(1) assert copyright on the software, and (2) offer you this License giving you legal permission to copy, distribute and/or modify it.

For the developers' and authors' protection, the GPL clearly explains that there is no warranty for this free software. For both users' and authors' sake, the GPL requires that modified versions be marked as changed, so that their problems will not be attributed erroneously to authors of previous versions.

Some devices are designed to deny users access to install or run modified versions of the software inside them, although the manufacturer can do so. This is fundamentally incompatible with the aim of protecting users' freedom to change the software. The systematic pattern of such abuse occurs in the area of products for individuals to use, which is precisely where it is most unacceptable. Therefore, we have designed this version of the GPL to prohibit the practice for those products. If such problems arise substantially in other domains, we stand ready to extend this provision to those domains in future versions of the GPL, as needed to protect the freedom of users.

Finally, every program is threatened constantly by software patents. States should not allow patents to restrict development and use of software on general-purpose computers, but in those that do, we wish to avoid the special danger that patents applied to a free program could make it effectively proprietary. To prevent this, the GPL assures that patents cannot be used to render the program non-free.

The precise terms and conditions for copying, distribution and modification follow.

And how do you know the Blue code that may or may not be present in SA-MP is not from when Kye was actually on the MTA team?

We can use google code svn revisions to compare dates of when features where added, and compare blue code to samp code (based on the version of samp)
