at this point, though i don't think open source is a good idea... yeah we can take measures to handle cheating... but wouldn't you rather we spend time making the mod more fun? rather than protecting the data.... Granted, more fun things could be implemented by a large group of people.. but the fun-factor would be nullified if the code kept getting hacked.... I say at least for now, we should work on a stable, and fun version of MTA, rather than just throwing a still Beta (mind you) copy out to the general public.

The only reason CS got hacked so much is because there are so many people playing it. And most of them are immature 13 year olds. Besides, none of those hacks come from the source being released, they were all from flaws or exploits to the Half-Life engine. And if you think you're going to stop cheaters when a large company like Sierra or Valve can't, you're dreaming. Especially when what you're essentially doing is hacking a game itself. Cheats are inevitable with this, you'll just have to trust the community not to do it, or only play with people you trust.

I think it's clear that a rather impulsive decision, such as releasing the source code to the entire GTA3 community, would do far more harm than good. It might contribute to the overall endeavour but there are factors you need to take into account given the nature of this project. Exploits being made evident is not something a sane body of coders would wish for in a networked gaming environment. That and the fact that if the community becomes dispersed due to an increasingly growing collection of second-rate modders then the entire GTA3 MTA endeavour would lose all of its cohesion.

Cheating is a null point it could happen right now anyway.

This attitude is highly detrimental to development as while it may prove difficult or unrealistic to say cheating can be removed entirely, the progression of it can be inhibited thanks to the source being in-house and unavailable to the unwashed masses. =)

Yeah, open source is MTA's perogitive, and it doesn't seem like the community has much to offer anyway. Although, they should really be open to help from anywhere they can get it, there's no reason to stunt production of MTA for whatever selfish reasons they have. It's too daunting of a project to do that.
