PC COMBO QUESTION!

Recommended Posts

Actually I can't afford a new PC.

My actual founds: $44.000 (not counting coins lol, it will be around $50.000)

What I need to buy a new PC (PCI-E like): at least $200.000

If you want to know those money counts in dollars, /500

I suggest to get some extra cash and buy a new pc, PCI-E is the new standard and AGP cards are rarely produced.

That GeForce 6200 is slow as molasses.

I suggest you save up your money to get something modern as well.

Damn. I won't be able to play decent games by about 2 months, due to my recently burned graphics card -_-

But the wait will be worth (hope so xD)

I actually don't know.

I was playing Minecraft, and it suddenly started to lag as hell.

So I stopped it playin', switched to Civilization IV... It was completely messed up with lines, like I was watching a DX error you got when you have a bad graphics card for the game you want...

Something like this

But WORSE.

So, I was wondering WHAT THE FUCK WAS HAPPENING WITH MY PC???

I restarted it...

And when it was almost done restarting (just some programs in the taskbar where being loaded)... IT AUTO-RESTARTED, LIKE A DAMN VIRUS. HAPPENED 3 TIMES.

My dad came to help me. Tried safe mode, it was working. Tried normal mode, didn't work.

Took the graphics card out and set the integrated one.

It was now working without any kind of problem in normal mode.

Using NOD32, made an analysis to the PC, no virus found.

So the problem is probably the graphics card.

(btw while trying something in BIOS, we dad touched the graphics card. It was pretty hot)

The fan probably died on the GPU (if it has a fan). If it doesn't have a fan, reseat the heatsink using fresh thermal paste.

No fan xD

reseat the heatsink using fresh thermal paste.

Humm... What? I didn't get that part lol

What is thermal paste?

Thermal interface material

Cheap thermal interface material has a tendency to dry out and become ineffective after several years.

Remove the GPU from the computer. On the back of it, there should be two or more pushpins. Push these together and then inwards to loosen the heatsink from the GPU. Clean off the paste off both the heatsink and the chip that you uncovered using isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, then apply a small amount (about this much) thermal paste to the top of the chip (don't spread it), then push the heatsink back into place. Make sure all the push pins are fully seated, then put the card back in the computer and see if it works.

I will wait my dad to test the graphics card at another PC in this new week.

If it works, then I will tell him to do what you say.

Otherwise, I'll have to buy a new one.

Thanks :)

LOL, I asked my dad about it.

That graphics card already got one of those things.

Of course it does - if the graphics card had no thermal paste between the heatsink and GPU die, it would overheat quickly. I'm saying to remove the current paste and apply fresh paste.

Well, I finally stopped this, bought a brand new NVidia Geforce 6200 - DDR2 512MB - AGP.

Plus 1GB for system memory, so I have 2 GB RAM DDR333 (yeah. still old xD).

It's making all my games and app run faster, so I'm very proud of this. Also, IT'S MY FIRST SELF HARDWARE PURCHASE, WITH MY OWN MONEY! :D

Though I may fully improve my PC after getting a paid job as game designer in a certain company.

But by now, this is enough to me.

Congratulations. I hope things run better now! I certainly wouldn't spend any more money with that computer - better to save your money for a more modern one now.

I actually won't, it is now set to max power, I cannot upgrade it anymore lol

I remember those days, it feels like a real achievement doesn't it?

I'm looking around for a new PC too. I've had this one for quite a while and its the last time I'm going to waste any money on an ATI card. Does anyone know any well recognised international computer companies? I've looked on dinopc.co.uk and they seem very reasonable with their prices.

You won't be able to play any game on High details with integrated graphic card.

Do you know that graphics card? Did you investigate about it?

Because it seems more powerful than we both suspect.

That game is running under the HD 2000.

The only thing I need to do is to buy more RAM (and maybe a 64-bit OS).

Just buy GeForce GTX.

Can't. After purchasing the i3 computer I won't have enough money.
