[SOLVED] Sandy Bridge performance issues?

I've had my GT680 for about a week. My previous computer was a mid-2009 15" MacBook Pro (Win7 via Boot Camp, 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo, 8GB RAM, 9600M GT 256MB), and MTA played between 30 and 36FPS (36FPS is the max of the server I usually play on).

With my GT680, on the other hand, I'm not getting good performance whatsoever.

I get the same frame rate at 1920x1080x32 (3xAA, Very High, full screen) as I do at 640x480x16 (0xAA, Low, Windowed). The actual numbers that I'm talking about are less than 25FPS. So, no matter what my video settings are, I'll never reach a good frame rate. I've tried on 266.58 ForceWare and 260.xx. My observation here is that the problem is not my GPU.

I'm starting to think that it's the processor. Maybe MTA needs some performance enhancements? I can easily hit 120~FPS in single player at 1920x1080x32 (3xAA, Very High, full screen). All of my other games (Black Ops, TDU 1/2, Bioshock, etc) all play fine at 1920x1080, high settings.

I'm using the "latest" nightly build of 1.0.4 (the one from 4 days ago).

(Oops, my mistake.)

I guess I should've been a little more detailed.

The FPS limit in the server I play on is 36FPS. The game is laggy, usually getting below 30FPS in certain situations, but I'll never hit 36FPS. Even on another server where the limit is 46FPS, I'll get less than 30FPS. Something, possibly in MTA, isn't playing nicely with my processor and isn't letting me get the full frame rate that I need. So, with that being said, I don't think that the frame rate limit is what's causing my issue. This is the only game that's giving me any issues.

The MTA frame rate limited is not very accurate in 1.0.4 - test how well it runs on a local server on your computer. It's much better on 1.1.

It's not the frame rate limiter... It's from MTA itself. My frame rate can go all the way down to 10 and up to 30 in very basic situations. It's not the frame rate limiter, it's not the GPU... My old, less powerful machine can easily hit the frame rate limit at high resolutions and settings. My new one is always 30 or less at the lowest or highest settings. Hopefully you understand now.

Ugh... I don't know what to do. I know that lag spikes should be natural, but when I'm starting a race with 40 people next to each other, I'll get down to 5FPS. My previous computer was easily able to get 20FPS in the same situation. My frame rate still drops like crap when at the lowest possible graphical settings. I'd try MTA 1.1, but there aren't any servers that seem to use it. I can hit 36FPS on both 1.0.4 and 1.1 with the map editor. Again, I know that lag decreases should be expected, but the fact that frame rates still get lower than my previous system has me wondering where the problem lies.

how about single player GTA?

As mentioned in the first post, I can easily hit 120+ FPS.

ALL of that's already installed... I doubt any of that is the issue. This is the only game I have that has performance issues... It's the fault of MTA, not my hardware or driver installation.

The Realtek HD Audio driver I linked to is definitely newer, as is the Ethernet controller probably. If you would give me the driver version listed in Device Manager of the following:

  • Any Intel system device under System devices, and of Intel Management Engine Interface
  • The Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN device and the Realtek device under Network adapters
  • The Intel storage controller under IDE/ATA storage controllers

Also try updating DirectX runtimes if you haven't yet.

Beyond what Towncivilian is suggesting, I'm not sure we can do much to help, without being able to reproduce it on our own computers.

If we could, we'd profile MTA and see what's happening, but this is probably hard for you to do yourself (unless you're willing to get down-and-dirty with the code!)

If you obtained your drivers from the MSI website, the following are outdated and you should install the newer ones that I posted:

  • Realtek HD Audio
  • Realtek Card Reader
  • Realtek LAN
  • Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN

Of course, none of those are likely to resolve your issue. Also, you should be aware of the Sandy Bridge chipset recall.

I am aware of the recall. It only happens to a very small amount of chipsets/processors. Plus, it takes quite a while for the SATA ports to become degraded.

Anyway, it's definitely the processor. Using Intel's turbo boost monitor, my frame rate in-game was under 22FPS at the start of a 40 player race. Within 3 seconds, the processor speed slowly moved up to 2.60GHz. As soon as that happened, the frame rate immediately hit 36FPS, the limit of the server I was in. I just wish there was a way I could make the processor speed stay at that clock speed while gaming instead of jumping all over the place as needed. Quite annoying.

Woo!!!!! Figured it out. If I change my power options to "High Performance", the clock speed will stay at 2.90GHz the entire time, thus giving me a SOLID 36FPS in the server.

Problem solved :D.

Hmm, so Intel's SpeedStep causes this issue? I guess that could make sense on a laptop. Good job on figuring it out!

Looks like I'm a bit late, but I do know one possible issue with newer setups. When I built my newest machine, I was able to run GTA IV at 60+ FPS on all high settings, yet MTA would run at about 15. There seems to be an issue were sometimes the CPU doesn't come out of idle mode and won't "hit the gas" to run MTA at a decent framerate. I solved this by installing a windows sidebar widget were I can change my windows power profile on-the-fly, so I can set it to "high" for gaming and "low" for idling. I suggest you either find a widget like this, or you can change your settings in "Power Managment" in the Control Panel.

Also Note that new laptops with core i3-5-7 that have Intel HD & Another GPU card : Nvidia / ATI

That there's like in Nvidia a control panel that gives u to switch between 2 GPU cards called "Nvidia Optimus"

I actually have i5-2410m ( sandy bridge ) with AMD 1GB and I can run nearly all servers at 17 FPS.

The funny thing that I can run GTA V with higher FPS.
