Question about RAM

Hey all, currently using two 256MB cards of RAM. Thinking of getting a single 1Gb card.

Would it be wise to use one Gb with a 256?

thanx.

Most 1gb sticks just seem to be incompatible with most motherboard for some uber gay reason. Plus RAM likes to break frequently, rather lose a 256mb man a 1gb if it comes to the crunch. (if ofc u never keep receipts like an idiot - me).

Whats the FSB on ur proc ?

What motherboard u got ? whats the chipset ? nf* ? via kt** ?

Assuming ur on bog standard ddr with a 266 FSB

Replace that 256 with 2x 512mb ddr400 and clock it down to say 266 (if ur on say nf2 for exampe at the mo)

If u choose to upgrade ur mobo (if its old) in the future to say A64 you have the ram already n can start using that extra mhz on it. DDR400 is gonna be good enough for a good while yet and its cheap, hell even kingston or corsair value ddr400 is cheap.

Dont worry obut the speed they are running if u mix them as Gamefreek was explaining. RAM cannot run at different speeds they both run at TWICE the speed of ur FSB (thus DDR - Dual Data Rate). Unless ofc ur overclocking and using a mem divider.

I think he ment make sure you dont go getting a stick of 266mhz ram if ur current is 333mhz. They wont play together and will clock down to the slowest ram modules speed. But u can easily get a stick off 333mhz n stick it with 266mhz cos the 333mhz will cliokc down. If ur mixing ram be sure to set timing to manual.

All this helps much appreciated guys :D

Only cos ur Irish

U got 2x 256mb sticks of DDR266, it looks as though its 133mhz but because of DDR (Dual Data Rate) the actual frequencey is 266mhz.

U shouldnt really need much more than a gig, so just get 2x 512mb stick of DDR266. That'll cost around 15 - 20 GBP. (I'd get ddr400 for when u upgrade, shouldnt cost much more than 30 - 40 GPB pending on where u buy).

That will give you a big performance boost for very little cash. Plus ur running an MSI board, which shouldnt mind mix matched RAM, be sure to default the BIOS settings before installing ur new RAM module(s).

Good luck !
