  22. please note that this is the first half of a story that my friend wrote not me and i would like some posts before i put up the other half, but please enjoy! Before I begin, let two things be known. 1. This story is NOT involved in the Metal Gear Solid universe. It does however, take heavy influence from that series (e.g. Stealth rather than combat). If you are a fan of the MGS games, then I would suggest reading this story. It may not be Metal Gear Solid, but it’s got all the love that MGS has : ). 2. This story is fictitious. Any similarity to any person or entity, living or dead is purely coincidental and is in no way meant to offend anyone. Well that’s enough blabbing from me, so enjoy! Raven Prologue The people of Yaku Island didn’t know what hit them. At 2:00am their island was seized by a group of terrorists known as Dark Wind. They struck with lethal precision and timing, rounding up the entire islands’ population and capturing every building within a few short hours. The terrorists wanted three billion dollars in cash, and all of their jailed members released. Why did they think they could get this? They had a nuclear missile on their side... The US immediately scrambled a crack team of their best commandos to resolve the threat. They were called Special Operations: Raven. Chapter 1 We landed on the island at about 8:00am after the day of the capture. The media had gone crazy over this event, as it hadn’t had a good terrorist threat to televise for a few years now. We moved up the beach to a protruding rock coming out of the sand. It was a very peaceful beach, and if someone who hadn’t heard the news in the past twenty-four hours or so, he or she wouldn’t of thought this island was being held by terrorists. Daniels signaled to my colleagues and I to move up the beach and to check the place out. I gripped my SOCOM tightly and waited for the expected sound of gunfire tearing down one of my partners, but no such thing happened. We were in luck. We made our way up the beach and into the start of the dense forest. Although the mountainous terrain was in the distance, it still managed to loom above us. “Somehow we’re supposed to find 500 hostages, a bunch of pissed off terrorists and a nuke on this island” said Daniels, the leading commando “Well the nuke will be easy, there’s a tourist resort on the other side of those mountains, with a runway,” said Johnson, the technical guy. “So that would have a radio and radar.” “The only other problem is the snipers and patrols that will be hidden in the mountains,” Daniels replied “Well if they have a radio they would probably be able to pick up our signals,” I said. “That’s just a chance we’ll have to take. And anyway, we’ll be sticking in a group so it doesn’t matter” Daniels said. We started moving through the thick forest at walking pace. There were five of us. Daniels, who was the leader and my good friend. We were both very skilled in sneaking missions and could handle any type of weaponry, although I preferred a sniper rifle against any other weapon, but he preferred a good Pistol. There was Johnson, the technical guy. He could handle any type of electronic device including nukes, but he could still fire a weapon if he had to although he was very combat shy. There was Walker, a guy who was the complete and utter opposite of Johnson. He was a combat hardened soldier who had served in the Gulf War, and later moved into the CTU. He would prefer to use any big weapon but he mostly preferred his standard MP5 or M16. And the last guy was Pak. He was a brand new recruit and still pretty green. This was his first live combat mission and he was only chosen because his ability to read and speak fluent Japanese and Chinese. We came to a clearing and halted. We all quickly crouched down. “Why the sudden stop?” I asked Daniels. “I think I saw a soldier just up on that hill” He replied. “Want me to check it out?” “Yeah go ahead”. “Ok”. “And Roberts?” “Yeah?” “Be careful, we don’t need you dead any time soon”. “Ok”. I crawled up to a rotting log just in front of me and peered through my scope. Nothing. I switched it to thermal vision and the world through my scope turned into many different shades of red. But still no real signs of a human. Then, I saw the tip of someone’s head poke over the hill and then another. I couldn’t see if they had weapons or not. So I signalled to Daniels, and we all moved into position. When we were in position, I saw that they were carrying weapons, so I waited for Daniels and Walker to move around and flank the two sentries. We fired simultaneously and took out both sentries with a clean shot to the head. “Grab their radios” I said. We moved up to the two dead bodies. The two soldiers looked of an Asian culture, probably Chinese. We hid their bodies and weapons, and scanned their radios for voices of enemy troops. We listened hopefully for about three minutes until we heard a faint Asian voice. Pak translated: “The terrorists are asking for three billion dollars and for the US government to release all jailed members of Dark Wind, or they will launch the nuke within 96 hours. All cities in the region have been put on high alert, until this crisis ends,” Then we heard a crackle as the radio started playing a song. “Pak you don’t need to translate this” I said. We all gave a nervous laugh. Although we weren’t new to this scenario, it still occasionally gave us the jitters, especially when there were millions of innocent lives involved. It took us the rest of the day, and three dead soldiers to reach our waypoint. When we arrived, we were all tired, so we sat down, cautious but relaxed. We heard a crackle as Pak’s radio blared to life. There was another Asian voice but it didn’t sound anything like the radio we heard before. “It must be the terrorists radio controller,” Commented Johnson. “Pak, tell them you and the other guard are ok,” I said. He said something and then the radio went back to static. We all gave a sigh of relief. It was getting late so we decided to sleep tonight and take it in turns to do a sentry job. The team unanimously voted that I should go first. “Stupid democracy” I muttered under my breath as I walked around the empty forest. It was a full moon, but a very windy evening. This created an atmosphere so thick, you could cut it with a knife. I barely managed to stay awake, but I knew that if I fell asleep on sentry duty I was risking the lives of my whole squad, so I tried my hardest to stay awake. It was about 11:00pm when I switched sentry duties with Walker. I lied down and immediately fell asleep. I knew we had a hard slog ahead of us, so I needed all the rest I could get. Chapter 2 There was a mind-numbingly-bright light. I saw a massive fiery ball enveloping in on itself. It was moving at a rapid pace slowly forming the evil looming figure of a mushroom cloud. It rose upwards into the sky as I heard the screams of millions of people all around me. Then, the shock wave hit. The last thing I saw was a massive wall of fire just meters away from me. Then darkness. “Oh SHIT!” I yelled. Daniels spun around and almost took my head off from the fright I gave him. I had broken out in a cold sweat and was panting heavily. Then, I realised it was only a dream. “Phew” I said. “Wake the others, we’re moving out,” said Daniels. Everyone except Walker was slow to wake. Walker almost broke my neck as he was yelling “Don’t touch me you bas- oh it’s you” he then calmed down and got up. It was 4:00am as we started off. We were all less on edge today, except for Walker, who almost had a heart attack when I woke him up. The sun wasn’t up yet but you could almost see the first few rays of light peeking over the ominous mountains that loomed in front of us. It was still about another day’s walk until we were at the foot of the mountain, but we were already dreading the awful climb that was ahead of us. Suddenly we saw a shot pelt the dirt next to me. I yelled “SNIPER, GET DOWN!!” there was a dull thud as everyone hit the wet, dew-filled grass. We all stopped moving. Walker, who was still on edge, yelled, “Kill him! He’ll radio for backup!” With that, I quickly peered into the scope of my rifle and took aim. I instantly fired a shot at his head, taking him down before he had the chance to radio for assistance. “Phew, that was close” I said to myself. “Check if there is any more troops first!” Yelled Pak. I Scanned the landscape through my scope and failed to find any more, so we moved up to the tree which he was in and hid his body. “That was close,” said Daniels. I looked down at the sniper and saw his lifeless body. One of his hands was reaching for his radio and the other holding the rifle. “Hmm, Russian made sniper rifle, only Asian terrorist groups would be able to afford a weapon of this accuracy, so I’m guessing that the terrorists are Chinese.” “Well they spoke in Chinese over the radio” said Pak. “But wait a second, if the terrorists have problems with the US, why not nuke the US, not Japan?” I asked. “Because the UN are meeting in Tokyo this week, actually in the next three days” said Johnson “So that means if they launch the nuke on Tokyo when the UN are there-“ “The world will be thrown into chaos,” Daniels said, as he finished my sentence. “Yes that means that wars can and will just flare up everywhere, and there will be no one to stop them,” said Johnson. “So basically the whole world’s fate is resting on our shoulders,” I said. “Pretty much, yeah,” he replied. “And that is so reassuring” I said sarcastically. “Why don’t they just shoot it down?” I asked. “Because it has a fail safe measure installed on it, so if the missile gets shot down, then it will still detonate, and also the fact that the Japanese don’t have any long range anti nuclear missile defence system so it would still do damage if it was shot down,” Said Pak “We weren’t briefed on any fail safe measures installed on the nuke though,” I said confusedly. “Well I was,” said Pak. “Hmm,” I said. By now the rest of the group was walking away from the tree the sniper had been in, and everyone had lost interest in the subject matter. All we thought about was that we were there to do our jobs, and come home again. After that event, everyone was very nervous, except me. I was still thinking about that conversation with Pak. But after a while I just thought it was a coincidence and it slipped past my mind. We continued walking through the thick forest for a long time, stopping at any sign of movement. I kept glancing at Pak to see what he was doing. Nothing. I swear he was doing something with the radio, but I wasn’t entirely sure. We kept moving until we heard the faint sound of running water. We slowly moved towards the sound until we saw it. It was a small creek. We looked around and we could see signs that people had been here. We decided to stop here for a while. I know it wasn’t in a commando’s nature to ‘stop for a rest’ but we were all on edge and very tired. We all sat down and had a break. Daniels walked off to go to the toilet, but a few minutes later he came running back. He was still gasping when he said “A patrol is coming, get into position,” Chapter 3 We all were in position, all very nervous. There were six of them but only five of us. We were all crouched on the ground waiting for them to move, but somehow I realised that they knew we were here. It was a Mexican stand off. We waited for what seemed an age. Eventually, the look on walker’s face told it all. He could bear it no more. He ran out and fired with his MP5 on full automatic. “WALKER NO!!” I screamed. Several bullets cut into his flesh, and at that moment, we all ran out, using the trees around us as cover while we fired in their general direction. After about two minutes of fighting, all the terrorists were dead and lying on the ground. Our attention immediately turned to Walker, who was now lying on the ground coughing up blood. “Johnson, get some bandages” said Daniels. Johnson just stared at him babbling quietly to himself. “GET THE GODDAMN BANDAGES!!” Daniels yelled. Johnson, who finally realised what was going on, immediately ran for the bandages. “Ok Walker, where have you been hit?” Asked Daniels. “I’ve been hi-“ he paused to cough up blood. “I’ve been shot in the stomach, and my right arm,” “Pak!” yelled Daniels, “Put some pressure on the wound,” “Pak?” I asked. Pak wasn’t even paying attention. He had his back turned to the rest of us, and looked like he was using the radio. “TURN THAT THING OFF AND GIVE US A HAND HERE!!” yelled Daniels. He continued to use the radio for another three seconds or so and then turned around with a very smug grin on his face. “What the hell is so funny!?” I Yelled. “Walker is dying here!!” “No you’re not Walker, you’ll be just fine,” Johnson said to Walker, in a vain attempt to reassure him. But we all knew it was too late. The last signs of life were fading from his face. I watched as the blood continued to gush from his wounds. His eyes seemed to glaze over, and then we could see that he was dead. There was silence throughout the group. We were now only four. After cleaning up the enemies and hiding their bodies, we took walker’s dog tags and dug his grave. We all said our silent prayers, washed our faces in the creek, and continued on our journey. Of the little energy we had left, almost all of it was sapped by the demise of Walker. During the walk to the foot of the mountains, Johnson was sobbing the entire time. By the time we got there it was just going on dark. I reassured Johnson as we stopped at the base. We all sat down, and I couldn’t help throwing up. After eating our rations, we moved around to the most accessible way into the mountains. We found a well-worn track which tourists probably used as a mountaineering track. At the base of the path, we found a note. It was written in Japanese, according to Pak, so he read it. “Help. The island has been taken over by terrorists. We are fleeing from them. We have taken refuge in the forests. There are the most patrols down here, but it is easier to hide from them. Please come quickly. Please help.” “Well what do we do?” I asked. “Hmm” said Daniels “I think the best thing we could do would be to complete the mission and then worry about the civilians” “No!” Protested Pak. “I grew up in Asia, its a hard place, we always helped each other all the time. I am not going to let my brothers and sisters just die here!” “And so what, you are going off on your own to rescue a few lost travellers, when millions of people are under threat!?” I asked incredulously. “You guys can deal with it, I’m finding those hikers,” He said. And with that he set off. “Ok keep in radio contact though,” said Johnson. “We’ll be on channel thirty two,” Pak didn’t reply. We decided to let him go. We needed to focus on the big picture. The three of us started up the winding path into the mountains. It was really a very scenic route that we took. We walked past fields upon fields of wildflowers on our ascent. The smell of pollen was thick in the evening air. All of a sudden Johnson broke out in fits of sneezing. “Hay fever go to you eh?” said Daniels. “Very funny,” he said sarcastically in between sniffs. “It comes and goes.” “Well it’ll be gone soon, come morning we’ll almost be in the snow”. And so we went on, occasionally radioing to Pak to see how he was going. He seemed very jittery when we talked to him. We decided to stop for a breather, as it was very hard going. We looked out over the island. It was beautiful. We could see all the way out to the small beach we landed on. But then we saw small flashes of light through the forest. The flashes of light moved in wide arcs. “Patrols” I said. Just that word sent a shiver down everyone’s spine. “They must be looking for us,” said Daniels. “Well they’re looking in the wrong place aren’t they?” said Johnson. Then we all heard the distinct barking of dogs. “Shit. With dogs they’ll be able to find us in no time.” I quickly looked through the scope of my rifle. I switched it to infrared to have a look. “Three dogs, and about ten men,” I said. “Hmm, we must get moving, now,” Said Daniels. “We can lose our scent in the snow” “How about leaving some treats behind for our four legged friends so that it throws them off our trail?” suggested Johnson. “That’s the brightest thing I’ve heard out of you all of this mission,” Said Daniels. We all started throwing pieces of our rations off the mountain. We made sure they weren’t big enough for the guards to hear where they landed, but big enough for the dogs to sniff out and eat. Afterwards, we got our gear together and headed upwards, into the waiting white of the mountains. Chapter 4 It was the morning of the third day. We were well and truly up in the mountains by now, where all the vegetation had disappeared and the snow capped mountain summits began. When we reached the top we radioed Pak. No answer. We tried several times but no response. “Maybe it’s the batteries,” said Johnson. “These batteries are supposed to last for up to a week,” said Daniels “Maybe a technical problem?” I asked “No, these are built for the outdoors, there’s no way they’d break,” Said Johnson. “So then he’s been captured” said Daniels. Suddenly, everything seemed to click into place for me. “Or he’s decided to turn his radio off” I suggested. “What are you saying?” asked Daniels, “That he’s actually purposely turned his radio off?” “No” I said, “I’m suggesting he’s a traitor” “What!?” said Daniels “Are you insane?” “Well that’s the only conclusion I could come to, I mean it all adds up. How did he know about the fail-safe measure on the nuke?, how could we know what he was saying on the radio? When Walker was killed he wasn’t even paying attention, and how could we know that he was really reading what it said on the note? He barely even looked at it! Just after we set off up the mountain we see lookout parties combing the area we just came from, And now this, he decides to go off into the wilderness when there is scores of terrorists lurking around there and he just happens to not have his radio on. Don’t you think that’s a tiny bit strange?” “Maybe you’re just being a little bit over paranoid,” said Daniels. His voice didn’t sound as strong as it usually did. “Well that is strong evidence”, said Johnson “but they could all be easily explained as coincidences”. “But this many?” “Well yeah, coincidences do happen and usually in big lo-“ Johnson’s sentence was interrupted by a hail of artillery shells. Upon impact, the snow was instantly turned brown in big patches as the artillery shells made contact with the topsoil. We instantly hit the ground and started crawling to a safer spot. We ended up behind a big pile of rocks. For about a minute there was a cease in the fire. I said to Johnson “And I suppose that is a coincidence too?” “Ok maybe you were right, but how can we be sure?” “Well we sure aren’t going to stay alive very long if we sit around here all day!” interrupted Daniels. The artillery bombardment continued for about an hour, slowly getting weaker until it was non existent. We had taken shelter in a small cave. We tried Pak again. No answer. We all decided to take Pak out of the situation and thought that he was dead or no longer on our side. Johnson was our lookout while we were in the cave. He was using binoculars to scout over the landscape. All he could see was white. Then, he yelled, “I can see enemies!” “Where?” asked Daniels “On the far ridge of the Plateau” he replied. “How many?” “I can’t count them exactly, but I’d say about twenty,” “Hmm, twenty on three, I don’t like those odds.” “Well I suggest that we switch to our winter camouflage and hopefully we can sneak past them” “Johnson, can you see where they’re coming from?” “Yeah, they’re coming out of... the mountain.” “There must be a tunnel network in there.” “It’d be heavily patrolled,” he said “Not if they have only just discovered it, and I don’t think they would expect us to go through the tunnels anyway.” “Johnson, do you have IR goggles in your pack?” “Yeah I think so.” “Well than that’s our safest option.” “What if they find us?” “Well they won’t find us, will they?” Said Daniels arrogantly. We donned our winter camouflage and moved out across the snow. We stopped several times to hide from enemy troops, each time covering our weapons with our bodies and lying deathly still on the ground. It took us several hours and three dead enemies to make it to the cave that the terrorists supposedly came out of. We quickly hid behind a rock and looked towards the entrance. It was heavily patrolled. “Shit,” I cursed, “how the hell are we gonna get past that lot?” “Hmm” said Daniels. “We should wait until dark” Johnson suggested. “And what? Lose valuable time? The terrorists are planning to nuke Tokyo within 36 hours!” I protested. “Well that’s a risk we’re gonna have to take,” Said Daniels solemnly. “Bull shit!” I yelled. “Shut up!” yelled Daniels “They’ll hea-” We all watched as a soldier came walking up to the rock that we were hiding behind. He saw me just as he was grabbed from behind by Daniels, holding his SOCOM to the terrorist’s head. “Don’t shoot him, I’ve got an idea. We need no blood on his uniform,” I said. Chapter 5 I breathed heavily in my ‘borrowed’ terrorist’s balaclava and uniform as I walked to the entrance of the tunnel. There were two other guards patrolling around it. I walked up casually behind one of them and aimed my stolen gun at the guard’s head. I cringed as I pulled the trigger. The other guard automatically turned around and saw me. He started shouting to me in Chinese just as Daniels ambushed him from behind. He disarmed the terrorist and took his uniform. “Good job” I said By the time we moved into the tunnel it was about 8:00pm “Daniels, you’ll have to go first, When I killed that terrorist, I got blood on my uniform. If they see me, it’ll be a dead give away that I’m not one of them.” “That also means I won’t be able to use IR goggles, because that would give me away too,” he replied. “Its ok, we’ll see for you,” said Johnson. “Thanks guys,” he said gratefully. The tunnel had a very musty smell in it, like it had not been used in a very long time. It was also very warm in there compared to the snow. Our winter uniforms were making us sweat. We slowly moved through the tunnel, aiming our guns at whatever looked suspicious. The tunnel was a vast maze, varying in height and width as we moved through it. At several points, there was barely enough room for crawling, but at others, you could move freely around. We found no guards in the tunnel for about two hours, until we came to a cross section. There was one guard in front of us, and we couldn’t see around the corners. We backed up about ten meters and crouched down. “Give me a grenade” I whispered to Johnson He put down his backpack and started rummaging through it. He pulled out a grenade. “No, not a frag grenade, a flash-bang” “Oh right.” He continued to rummage through his pack until he stopped. “I can’t find one,” He whispered “Did you try your belt?” I asked He felt around his belt and pulled out a flash-bang. “I’m surprised you made it out of the academy, idiot,” I said. He laughed as I gave the grenade to Daniels. Daniels walked down the corridor, pulled the pin out and threw the flash-bang. All we heard was the tinking sound of the grenade hitting the ground, a Chinese voice which could probably be roughly translated to “What was that?” and the hissing sound of the magnesium lighting as the flash-bang went off. We all closed our eyes and blocked our ears as the flash-bang detonated. After a few seconds, we ran forward to inspect our victims. We could hear them screaming as they rolled around on the ground. Eventually, the tunnels fell quiet once more. We walked up to them to see their faces. They all looked unconscious. “Take their radios” Daniels said. I bent down to take the Radio off of the guard at the end of the cross section with Johnson, when I heard the similar tinking of a grenade hitting the ground. “GRENADE!!” I yelled. There was the metallic clang of the fragmentation grenade going off. And then, the sound of metal cutting through flesh echoed throughout the tunnels. I will never forget that sound. Johnson and I immediately ran up to Daniels who was lying on the ground. “Daniels, can you hear me!!” I yelled, “Daniels, can you hear me!?” Daniels let out a moan as blood soaked through his winter uniform. “Where are you hurt?” I asked. There was no reply. “Johnson! Get some Morphine!” I yelled. Johnson just stood there. “GET THE FRIGGIN MORPHINE!” I yelled. Johnson ran to his pack, which was badly damaged in the in the explosion. He fumbled around for the morphine and came back a minute later. “Help me get his winter gear off” I said. Johnson and I ripped away at his clothing. Daniels was losing blood fast. We found where the blood was coming from. “It looks like the femoral artery,” I said grimly. “Is there anything we can do?” asked Johnson. “Te-“ Daniels murmured. “Tell my wife I was a proud and noble soldier. Tell her that I died an honorable death for my country. And mostly, tell my wife that I love he-“ “Your going to be ok” I said reassuringly. But then, after three minutes of trying to keep him alive, we saw that he had passed away. “Check his pulse” I said “He’s gone,” said Johnson. Johnson walked away and started pacing back and forth for a while until he broke down and wept. I went over to Johnson to console him. He was a mess. “We tried our best,” I said “It’s my fault” he said, “if I could have gotten the morphine faster than he still would have been alive.” “It would have made no difference, the wound was fatal.” “It’s no use, why do we bother? Can’t we all just, get along?” “I wish that were so too.” “I mean, violence, lies, deceit, racism, it’s everywhere,” He said, “well I’ve had it! I don’t care any more. Two of our colleagues have died, and another is missing. I’m getting out of here. We’ve failed the mission.” “It’s not about the mission any more!” I yelled, “it’s about the fate of twenty million people!” Johnson reached for his belt and pulled out his pistol. He put the gun to his temple. “Put the gun down,” I said firmly “I don’t care any more!” he yelled “PUT THE FRIGGIN GUN DOWN NOW!!!” I yelled “I DON’T CARE!!!” Johnson pulled the trigger, and there was a clicking sound. He had left the safety on. The gun hung on his now limp index finger for a few seconds before falling to the ground. Johnson broke down into a fit of tears. “Maybe you don’t care, but I can assure you that twenty million people sure do,” I said, “Without you I can’t disarm the bomb. And then there’s no hope for any of us.” He continued to quietly sob as sunlight flooded the tunnels. “It’s dawn,” I said. Chapter 6 We were both deeply affected by the death of Daniels, and found it hard to go on. But somehow, we managed to. The lust of battle had died in me, and all I could think about was going home. But I knew that I had a job to do, and that if I didn’t complete it, I was dead either way. The tunnel came out of the mountains at the start of a walking track. From there we could see all the way down to the coast. We looked down and saw a small village mostly made up by the tourist resort. It looked heavily fortified. “I bet that’s where the hostages will be, and the nuke too” “Mm, I agree,” said Johnson “I can see a group of tanks to the east” “Hmm, they’re probably getting ready for a counter attack” “From what, the Japanese defence force?” “Precisely” I replied. “If they’re attacked, they’ll launch the nuke straight away” “I think they’re relying on us to disarm it” “Damn it!” he cursed. Johnson began to sneeze again. His hay fever had got to him. We moved quickly down the mountainside, knowing that time was against us. It took about an hour of running to get to the base of the track. By then we were exhausted. We took a break, which was interrupted by a patrol. We were still in winter camouflage gear, so we stood out like a sore thumb. The two guards thankfully didn’t see us. “Johnson, I have an idea,” I whispered “What?” he replied “We need their uniforms” “And what do you expect me to do?” “We need to do the same thing we did in the mountains, except with only two people” “You know I’m not too confident on killing” “What?” “I’ve never actually told anyone this, but I’ve never fired a weapon in live combat” “Well its time you learned” I said “Wait!” “What is it now?, Johnson” “I have tranquilliser rounds. That gets no blood on their uniforms and keeps them out of it for 24 hours” “Ok then, I guess” “They’re designed to fire in any .45 calibre weapon. You have a SOCOM don’t you?” “Yeah. I’ll use them in that.” I moved quietly around behind the two guards. I waited for Johnson to make a diversion. He did the smart thing by not using his body but instead using a grenade. There was a loud metallic bang as the grenade went off. It got the two guards attention immediately. I moved up behind one and fired the tranquilliser round at his head. He was out within a second. I moved around to the other guard and did the same. We took their uniforms and weapons. “Hey Johnson, what about that backpack your carrying. If you’re seen with that, they’ll know straight away that you’re not one of theirs.” “Yeah, your right” “What’s in it?” “Medical equipment, ammo, gren-“ “Take only what you need to disarm the nuke, and find a way to conceal it” “Uh, ok” he replied He took out a pair of wire cutters, a radiation detector and a set of screwdrivers and hid them in his pockets. “Is that all?” I asked “Well, in this day and age, yes” “I thought it’d be a lot harder than that.” “Well it isn’t. Anyway we better get moving,” he said. We walked like guards would, cautiously but always alert. We walked for about a kilometre until we came to a grassy knoll just behind the tanks. There were six tanks and four guards, one at each corner of a rectangular pattern. “How the hell did they get tanks onto the island?” I asked. “They look like Type 95’s. Those are very old tanks. They were probably used in World War Two.” Said Johnson. “How do you know that?” “Tanks is a hobby of mine,” “Hmm. Anyway, we need to get past them, but we need to be careful,” I said “Do you know any Chinese?” asked Johnson “No. That’s what Pak was for. Relax, we’ll be fine as long as we look like patrolling guards” We walked casually past the tanks when one of the guards came over to talk to us. He said something in Chinese, which neither of us could understand. He continued talking and we just nodded. Then, he started yelling. With that, I fired at him with my stolen AK, killing him instantly. The other three soldiers came running to our position. We had to think fast. I gave Johnson a quick glance, and then we both started yelling and pointing towards a building about three hundred metres away. Thankfully they started running in that direction. We waited until they were a significant distance away, and then we ran towards the tanks. “Any idea how to sabotage these things Johnson?” “You blow apart their barrels” “With what?” I asked “With that dead soldiers grenade” “What about the noise factor?” “Hang on, if we throw it in the turret, then that should disable the barrel’s firing mechanism” After disarming the guard, we sabotaged the tanks one by one. It took us about an hour and by the time we finished it was about 10:00. We walked into the small village near the tourist resort to see if any guards had been alerted by our activities. There was only one guard on patrol. I sneaked up behind him, and in my most professional voice said, “Freeze” The guard raised his hands in the air. “Johnson, take off his balaclava,” I said Johnson took off his balaclava and turned him around to face me. “Pak?”
